Surface Roughness Testers

Rough surfaces generally wear out faster than surfaces with a smooth finish. An abraded surface is also more vulnerable to cracks, corrosion and rupture. One benefit to a rough surface, however, is adhesion. Therefore, roughness is a critical parameter to determine a surface’s suitability for a stated purpose. Surface roughness testers are used to accurately determine the surface texture of a material.

Surface roughness testers are also referred to as profilometers. Thread Check Inc. offers a complete range of PHASE II+ portable surface roughness testers. The use of portable, hand held, profilometers are primarily by manufacturers and in industrial environments. The PHASE II+ surface roughness testers are ideal for any shop floor that manufactures products with surface finish requirements. These testers are economical and easy to use.

A surface roughness tester shows the measured roughness depth (Rz) as well as the mean roughness value (Ra) in micrometers or microns (µm). Surface roughness is measured through the application of a roughness filter. Different international standards and surface texture or surface finish specifications recommend the use of different roughness filters. For example, a Gaussian filter often is recommended in ISO standards. PHASE II+ has upgraded the SRG-2000 economy surface roughness tester with the addition of 4 parameters - Ra, Rms, Rz, and Rt. The most popular parameter is Ra which is defined as the arithmetic average roughness. The Ra method is easy and efficient but there are other parameters that can be more specific for an application.

Whatever your application requires, Thread Check has the right surface roughness tester for the task. To learn more or to obtain a quote, please complete and submit a request or speak with us at (800) 767-7633.
